Halo Pepakura Build: Halo 3 Marine Helm
I built the pdo I finished unfolding the other day.
We’ve also coated the inside with polyurethane casting resin, not quite done there, though.

“polyurethane casting resin”, Isn’t that used for making molds? How well does it work for support? From what I’ve read, it’s more expensive than fiberglass.

Sure is. However, add it all up- with fiberglassing you need the resin, the mat, gloves, brushes, specially-coated paint trays or containers.. with this we just needed some paper cups and a couple plastic stirrers.
There’s also a time advantage- it was all done in around an hour, maybe an hour and a half, instead of 30-45 minutes per coat, like resin and fiberglass.
Add the fact that it smells slightly like coconut candy and isn’t messy and toxic to work with.. and you won’t see us using resin for a long time.

Wow! That seems perfect. Do you still have to use Bondo to detail it, or can you just sand away at it?… I mean, it is plastic, right?
Quart-for-quart this is about $2 more than resin/Bondo, at $24… but it saves so much time, and money on other supplies, and it’s not dangerous… If Bondo isn’t needed, I think I might start using this, instead of the Resin/Fiberglass combo.
This is amazing, dude.

I can sand it pretty easily- it produces a very high volume of crap to the amount removed, though.. that might be the paper.
What we used was the Smooth-cast 300, if you want to look up physical characteristics.
It’s sitting outside soaking right now, should make it easier to remove the paper.

so are you going to release the pdo file on the 30th?
